Lady Bug: the Heartbreak and Hope of Dog Rescue
We work with so many amazing dogs on a daily basis. Lately, we have been focused on a beautiful Pit Bull named Lady Bug. She is being fostered with one of our Alabama rescuers, and we wanted to share a little bit about her journey.
We first saw Lady Bug’s photo on Facebook November 17th. She was on a stainless steel table with a belly full of pups with “URGENT” next to her name. Urgent means she was slated to be euthanized unless she was rescued. We saw a dog that deserved a better life, and I contacted our partner rescuer Brenda in Alabama. She told me if I was committed, she was committed, and in 24 hours, Lady Bug and her four pups were in Brenda’s care. Sadly, Lady Bug had delivered her puppies at the shelter overnight, and when the shelter staff came in that morning, two had already passed. Four remained, and we were hopeful. Lady Bug was in bad shape, emaciated and lethargic, but she was an awesome mama to her pups and was now finally being fed and loved.
Sadly, Lady Bug had developed a respiratory infection and has lost all her pups in just a few days. Both Lady Bug and Brenda have had an awful weekend. Unfortunately, this is a part of rescue many don’t see, but it is a reality.
Our efforts will continue with sweet Lady Bug, who now knows a life filled with love, warmth, food, shelter and hands of kindness as did her little pups, if only for a little while. That’s more than a lot of dogs and puppies get, and Brenda and Bugs gave it their best efforts for those little ones. We can’t wait until Lady Bug is healthy enough to come home.
